In a time of climate and environmental refugee crises, I have created a monument to milkweed and to monarch butterflies, important ecological contributors and well-known annual migrants. Milkweed’s reference to a seed pod designed for enclosed incubation followed by a release of silky seeds propelled through the wind reminds visitors that even seemingly stagnant periods (such as our slow reaction to the climate and refugee crises) are full of opportunities for progress. Milkweed plants serve as safe stopping points for monarchs along their journey, as Milkweed is a symbolic shelter or home for its visitors. The sculpture serves as a metaphorical welcome to immigrants, butterfly or human.
